Understanding Eating Habits

Why some children seem like 'fussy eaters' 🤔

Children's relationship with food is shaped by lots of things, and we take time to understand each child's individual needs rather than treating fussy eating as a problem to be solved overnight.

  • 🎯 Control — food is one of the few things children can control
  • 🧩 ASD, global delay or other developmental needs
  • 👯 Peer influence at the table
  • 🎨 Colour, texture or consistency of certain foods

If your child has a diagnosed dietary requirement — such as an allergy — we'll work with you to put a specific diet plan in place, supported by a letter from your child's doctor.

Our Mealtime Philosophy

Mealtimes are a social experience — not just a necessity 🍽️❤️

We all know that life-long habits, both good and bad, have their roots in the pre-school years. We talk a lot about social skills, cognitive ability and self-esteem — but the habits children form around food during this time matter just as much.

That's why children sit in small groups, with an adult at each table wherever possible. Staff sit and eat the same meal as the children, so the children see grown-ups they trust enjoying the food in front of them. To build independence, we encourage children to serve their own food — with an adult always on hand to help.

Our nursery cook spends time getting to know every child and the little things that matter to them at the table. They're present throughout mealtimes — ready to spot a worry, answer a curious question, or help a child try something new.

Food Activities

Hands-On Activities That Build Confidence

Our cook runs activities throughout the year that help children explore food in a comfortable, supportive way — and discover they actually enjoy things they thought they didn't.

🥚

Boiled Egg

Children peel their own egg and talk about the texture and health benefits. They lick, smell and cut it up — and the adults eat alongside them, showing it's a good food to enjoy.

🎨

Messy Play

A range of foods, colours and textures laid out for children to experiment with — getting comfortable with touch, smell and sight before anything ever reaches the plate.

🥪

Sandwiches

Bread and a choice of fillings put in the children's hands — they make their own sandwich, make their own choices, and feel properly involved in their meal.

👩‍🍳

Cooking Activities

Children get hands-on with simple cooking — they understand how food is made, learn through doing, and feel proud of what they've created at the end of it.

During one activity we noticed some children didn't like their food touching — so we introduced plates with separate compartments. Small change, huge difference. That's the kind of thing we look out for, every day.
